'Police need to make women feel confident'

Vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia Najeeb Jung, 62, is all set to don a new role as the lieutenant governor of Delhi, and one of his top priorities will be the law and order situation in the city.
Jung, who will have control over the Delhi Police in his new position, says that the quality of policing in the Capital needs to be improved, with an eye on instilling confidence among the public, especially women.
"Even 50 years ago, we often used to say that Bombay and Madras were much safer for women than Delhi. The city has had issues regarding women's safety over time. These certainly can't be pushed under the carpet," he says.
Jung who has served as a district magistrate for 10 years says that this experience would help him have a better grip over law and order in the city, adding that the police need to become more approachable for the masses.
"We need to ensure women feel safe when they go to file a complaint at a police station," he says.
