More than four months after he escaped from police custody, the outer district police on Sunday arrested Neeraj Pal, one of the top 10 criminals carrying a bounty of Rs 50,000, along with his associate after a brief encounter.
Pal and his associate Pradeep were involved in several cases of robbery, murder, escape from prison, etc. The police said they recovered two weapons, including a country-made pistol, and a motorcycle from their possession. The police also claimed with their arrest they have solved two murders and several robberies committed by them.
Sanjay Kumar, additional CP (outer), said Pal, an under trial, escaped from Rohini Court Complex on March 30 while being produced in the court in a sensational dacoity case that took place at a jewellery showroom in Rohini.
“After his escape, Pal started threatening the witnesses in the cases, asking them not to appear before the court against him and his gang members. Pal then re-organised his gang and committed contract killings in Uttar Pradesh, robberies and other heinous crime in Delhi and NCR,” said Kumar.
On June 19, Pal and his associates Vicky alias Ganja, Vikas and Pradeep Negi committed two robberies — one in west Delhi’s Mianwali Nagar and another in north Delhi’s Rani Bagh. A team was constituted under the supervision of ACP Rajiv Ranjan Singh to develop information regarding their movement. On Sunday, the team received a tip-off that the gang members would arrive on GT Karnal Road in Alipur area to commit a robbery. The police laid a trap after that.
“Two men on a motorcycle were signalled to stop. But instead, they fired at the police party and attempted to flee. However, our officers immediately swung into action and nabbed the duo, identified as Pal and Pradeep,” added Kumar.
