A Delhi police official was on Saturday awarded one-year jail term by a city court for accepting a bribe of Rs 900 from a man for not implicating him and his family members in a criminal case.

Additional Sessions Judge O P Saini who held him guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act also slapped assistant Sub-Inspector Zile Singh with a fine of Rs 2,000.

"It is all the more serious that a public servant was harassing a person who himself was a victim and had gone to the police post to seek help," the court said.

The court, which did not award the maximum seven years jail term to the convict police officer, said the bribe amount involved was small.

Jamaluddin, a resident of Jamia Nagar in south Delhi, had lodged a complaint with a police post, headed by the convict ASI, on June 15, 2006, alleging that his brother indulged in power theft as he used to draw electricity unauthorisedly from his electric meter.

Instead of acting against the brother of the complainant, the police officer demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe for not implicating him and his family members in a false criminal case.

The complainant later lodged a complaint with CBI, which constituted a trap team and arrested the police officer while receiving Rs 9,00 bribe at the police post.
