Samreen is still waiting for her brother to celebrate her 17th birthday. Her brother Nadir (14), a class VI student of DPS, Mathura Road, was found dead in the school’s swimming pool on Friday evening. Police said on Saturday the child died due to drowning and ruled out foul play.

“Samreen turned 17 on Saturday and she had grand plans to celebrate her birthday with Nadir. Nadir had even bought a gift for her, now he is no more and she does not know whom to blame for his brother’s death,” said Nadeem, a cousin of Nadir. He has two elder sisters.

Police said they had registered a case of death due to negligence against the school authorities.

Investigations have revealed Nadir had scaled the gate of the swimming pool area and entered the pool when it was empty.

“He was wearing his undergarments and his clothes and his school bag was found near the change room. We even found a towel in his bag, which means he had come prepared from home to swim,” said a senior police officer.

His body was found around 5.30 pm. “We would be questioning the swimming pool coach and the security guards to ascertain the sequence of events,” said a senior police officer.
