Delhi Police have arrested three persons, including a Class XII student, for allegedly kidnapping a wrestler’s family in the Mongolpuri area of outer Delhi. Police fear the family might have been killed in what seems to be an instance of “honour killing”.

The accused — identified as Amrik Singh (37), Sandeep Kumar (26) and Preeti Kalra (28) — were arrested from Mussoorie on Wednesday. Police said the main accused, Amrik Singh — who has nine criminal cases registered against him — was unhappy with his niece Vibha Singh (24) for marrying wrestler Praveen Kumar (26) against the wishes of the family a year ago.

“Singh was also eyeing the property of Vibha’s father. On April 9, he invited Vibha for a family function at their Mongolpuri house. Her husband Praveen and her two-year-old sister Vaishali had also accompanied them.

“When they did not return home for two days, Praveen’s family lodged a complaint with the police on April 11,” said Atul Katiyar, DCP (outer).

Police said Singh was tired of the remarks made by villagers that his niece had married out of caste and against the wishes of the clan, so he hatched a conspiracy to kill her.

“Though we have not recovered the bodies yet, we fear the family might have been killed as we have recovered arms from their hideout in Mussoorie,” the officer said.

Police said Singh had roped in Sandeep Kumar who lives in the same village after promising him a plot of land.

“The woman Preeti Kalra is studying in Class XII and had met Singh a year ago. He had also promised her a plot,” the officer said.

Police said the accused reportedly drugged the family and took them to Mussoorie where they might have killed them.

Praveen, a national-level wrestler, had first made headlines for his ability to take in milk through his nose and to squirt it out of his eyes in 2001. His name also figures in the Limca book of records.
