The Delhi Police, probing allegations of bribery during the 2008 trust vote, will also look at the fresh revelation that a party engineered the sting operation by a TV channel, showing attempts to bribe MPs.
“It is being probed and will be taken to its logical conclusion, including taking into account fresh revelations now in public domain,” home minister P Chidambaram told Rajya Sabha.
He said the matter involved some Lok Sabha MPs who had alleged they were paid to vote for the UPA. The Speaker’s permission will be sought to seek their help in the investigation.
In an apparent reference to the latest issue of Tehelka magazine, Chidambaram said the revelations showed the sting was a “deliberate attempt in collaboration with a political party.”
The magazine wrote: “In fact, the shoe was on the other foot. It was the BJP that willfully set out to entrap either the Congress or SP into buying three BJP MPs so it could pull off a successful sting operation and discredit the government.”
It said the sting appeared to have the sanction of the former aide of BJP stalwart LK Advani and even some senior party leaders.
Tehelka stated that its story was based on the first-hand account of a former reporter of the channel that had telecast the sting operation.
The magazine also claimed to have 10 crucial phone recordings “that have never been shared in the public domain and were not even made available to the parliamentary panel set up to probe the scandal”.
The BJP dismissed the revelation as a futile cover-up bid by the Congress-friendly investigators.
“The last organisation which has the locus standi to question sting operations is the organisation which has carried the latest sting on your (Congress) behalf, because, ever since their birth, they have only carried sting operations,” said BJP leader Arun Jaitley.
