Many parts of South Delhi remained without electricity on Tuesday as 220 KV transmission lines of Badarpur and Okhla was shut down for restoration work by the power department.

The situation was aggravated by the fact that one of the transformers in the South Delhi area is also out of order and is yet to be repaired.

Areas such as Hauz Khas, Gulmohar Park, Defence Colony, Vasant Kunj, Vasant Vihar, Munirka, Saket, Mehrauli, Hauz Khas, CR Park, Alaknanda, Malviya Nagar, Adchini were severely affected.

“The line had developed some technical problem and it had to be restored immediately. The restoration work was carried out from 7 a.m. in the morning till 12 noon. As a result of this, the supply to many areas was affected. But we had made adequate alternative arrangements,” said a senior Transco limited official.

“There was no power supply in most of South Delhi areas for more than six hours. Even if they want to repair a line at least they should inform the residents beforehand,” said Sushma Saxena, a resident of Hauz Khas.

“In the morning, for more than four hours there was no electricity supply and in the evening too for there were power cuts for two hours,” she added.

The power distribution companies claimed that to cater to the increasing power demand in their licensed areas, during the months of April and May 2010, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) purchased 18 per cent more power respectively in comparison with the corresponding period last year.
