A seven-month pregnant woman has alleged that she was beaten up by the police on Thursday, an allegation that belies the government’s claims the police force was being sensitised on how to deal with women.
The woman filed a complaint at the Connaught Place police station on Tuesday. The Delhi Police have ordered a vigilance enquiry into the matter. There have been two more such cases in the past one week.
The complainant said a constable beat up her husband near Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place. “My mother-in-law came to save him but the police officer started beating her too. I rushed to save my husband but the police officer hit me with a stick. I am seven months pregnant and fell down,” she said in her complaint.
She alleged her husband was beaten up by the same constable again when they had gone to the police station to file a complaint. “I don’t know him but can certainly identify him if I see them again,” she said.
“We have conducted a medical examination on the woman. We have forwarded the details to the vigilance department and they will conduct a detailed enquiry into the matter. No action has been taken against the constable so far,” said a senior police officer.
