A 23-year-old pregnant woman was killed after a bike on which she was riding pillion with her husband was hit by a car from behind in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Sunday evening.
Police are trying to trace the vehicle and its rider. Police said it was not clear if the woman was wearing a helmet as they were yet to speak to her husband.
According to the police, the accident took place around 5.30 pm when Sugandhi Mangal, a resident of Kalyanpuri, was travelling from Noida to Nangloi on a bike with her husband Jitender Mangal (24).
“According to witnesses, as soon as the couple crossed the Mukundpur flyover, a car hit them from behind. The couple fell off the bike. The woman sustained critical injuries on her head and neck while Jitender escaped with minor injuries. Locals then called the police. The duo was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial hospital where Sugandhi succumbed to her injuries,” said a police officer not authorised to speak to media.
Deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Vijayanta Arya said Jitender or the passersby could not note down the number of the offending vehicle.
“The woman’s body was handed over to the family after post-mortem. We registered a case of rash driving and for causing death due to negligence. CCTV footage was being checked to identify the vehicle and trace the driver,” the deputy commissioner said.
