The Delhi Police have been directed by a local court to probe a murder convict’s unnatural death in Tihar Jail early this month, days before he was to be sentenced for the crime.

Shanker was found dead in his cell in the wee hours of December 1. According to the autopsy report, he died due to consumption of some poisonous substance or drugs.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau also added that the circumstances of his death appeared suspicious and that essential evidence might have been destroyed as 10 days had passed following the crime.

The court also said that Shanker’s death has raised several questions and their answers can be found only after a detailed investigation. The court also questioned as to why Hari Nagar police station had “registered no FIR under appropriate provisions of law till date”.
