A number of shops in prominent markets of the Capital are now facing the sealing threat.
Close to 900 shops in important markets such as Lajpat Nagar Central Market, Kalkaji, Kotla Mubarakpur among others, are facing the threat. These shops have failed to pay conversion charges to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for continuing commercial activity in there areas. The action will start from Monday.
The MCD's central zone had recently prepared a list of shops which are on notified roads, but have not paid conversion charges for the last two years. Residential properties on notified roads were allowed commercial use under the master plan of Delhi 2021, but the owners were supposed to pay one time charge for parking and registration, and an annual conversion charge.
"As per our records, the conversion charges collected two years back was less than what we collected four years back. We have sent notices to shops which have not been paying conversion charges," said a senior MCD official.
But the market association of Lajpat Nagar denies getting any such notice. "We have not got any such notice. We are regularly paying conversion charges," said Rajpal, president of Lajpat Nagar Central market.
