The Indian Railways on Wednesday said it would transport for free relief material to flood ravaged places in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
"The railway minister (Mamata Banerjee) has taken this major humanitarian gesture as a special case with a view to facilitate movement of relief material to flood affected areas for the benefit of millions of people marooned by the recent floods in these two states," the Indian Railways said in a statement.
The minister has also asked senior railway officials in these states to extend all help to the government and ensure that relief materials reach the distressed people well in time.
The railway minister has also spoken to the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and offered all help from the railways in this hour of crisis, an official release said.
