Rain brings cheer to Delhi, but the Met says monsoon still weak

Despite the light showers on Wednesday, Delhi is in the grip of one of the worst monsoon seasons ever. The capital should have received about 92 mm of rainfall in July by now. Instead, it has got only 13 mm. That is a deficit of 86 per cent. Avishek G Dastidar reports.

Yes, you enjoyed the light showers of Wednesday, but don’t let them fool you.

Delhi is in the grip of one of the worst monsoon seasons ever.

The capital should have received about 92 mm of rainfall in July by now. Instead, it has got only 13 mm.

That is a deficit of 86 per cent.

“The rainfall systems haven’t revived,” said S.C. Bhan, Delhi director, India Meteorological Department. “Some clouds have formed in the east coast but they aren’t strong enough to reach here. There’re no chances of it reviving anytime soon.”

Less rainfall will also mean more mugginess and pollution in the air, and a dip in the yield of the fruits and vegetables grown in and around Delhi during the monsoon.

But there is a small bit of good news: the Met Office has predicted one or two spells of light rain with thundershowers for Thursday.
