People in South Delhi woke up to an overcast sky and were treated to a downpour even as other parts of the city remained dry.

On Sunday, the maximum temperature settled at 35.3 degrees, while the minimum was 28 degrees.

“Areas in South Delhi received an average of 6mm rainfall. But the maximum temperature remained one degree above normal at 35.3 degrees celsius. The temperature through the week is likely to remain the same, with the temperature ranging between 30 and 34 degrees celsius,” a metereological department official informed.

Even as the city is likely to experience rain and thunderstorms, Delhiites are now, not looking forward to any more traffic jams or water-logging woes, that have come to be synonymous with the Delhi rains. The last week was no good news for anyone.

“Every main road was choc-o-block and there were traffic lights that were not operational. Of course, waterlogging is always an issue. The interior roads were a nightmare. The problems caused because of the rains are such a dampener,” said Vipul Mehta, a resident of Lajpat Nagar.

After being criticised by the High Court and harrowed residents of Delhi for not addressing the issue of water-logging, the North Corporation’s Leader of House Mahender Nagpal, has written to the lieutenant governor, complaining to him about the ‘unfairness’ of the blame.

Nagpal has written that even though most of the roads do not belong to the municipal corporations anymore, the three bodies are still being held responsible for the water-logging problem.

All the roads that are wider than 60 feet were handed to the Public Works Department (PWD) earlier this year. So, the onus of maintaining these also lies with them, claim the civic agencies.

“I have written to both, chief minister, Sheila Dikhsit and the lieutenant governor. I have requested both of them to understand that the corporations only have the colony roads under their purview and that there are no complaints of water-logging being reported from there,” Nagpal said.

Along with the three corporations, the Public Works Department had carried out the desilting process this year.

The blame game is on. It’s the two civic agencies against the PWD. The latter alleges that the three corporations have not cleaned the drains that connect the colonies to the main roads.

In the last 10 days, the city has been combating water-logging. The affected areas include the Ring Road and other major roads such as Mathura Road, Wazirpur and Ashok Vihar. Apart from these, Green Park, Vasant Kunj, Malviya Nagar, RK Puram, Lado Sarai, Hauz Khas market, Chaatarpur and Sarai Kale Khan were dealing with the post downpour mess too.
