BJP leader Rajnath Singh on Thursday made a veiled attack on Rahul Gandhi for his support to farmers' agitation in UP, saying people are aware as to who is their supporter and who is a farmer's son.
"What other political parties are doing on farmers' related issue I will not comment on it. But people know who is the son of a farmer and who is the supporters of poor people," Singh told reporters outside Parliament when asked about Rahul's campaign in UP over farmers' issue.
Asked his stand on RLD-led Parliament gherao agitation, he said, "Whenever there is a farmers' agitation we always support it."
Claiming that BJP has raised the farmers' issue from time to time in Parliament, he said, "Our view is that government should not acquire the fertile land because it will create a food crisis."
"If there is any party concerned about the farmers or poor people then it is BJP. People know how much work the BJP-led NDA government had done to improve the basic infrastructure in villages during its six year rule.
"We had reduced the interest rate on farmers loan and it was for the first time that such step was taken in independent India," he said.
On land acquisition issue, he said, "It was raised by me in parliament and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has assured that the bill would be placed in parliament.
Former BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu also hit out at Rahul.
"What is his experience? What is his contribution? Let us talk about what the Prime Minister or the Congress president has done instead. They talk of aam admi, but all their actions are to benefit the khas admi," he told reporters outside Parliament here.
Naidu accused the government of doing nothing to benefit farmers.
"Naam aam admi ka, kaam amir admi ka...words for the poor, work for the rich...that's what the UPA government has done," he said.
Naidu said the NDA government implemented several infrastructure projects such as gram sadak, cold storage centres, rural godowns, and reduction of interest on farmers' loan to seven per cent.
"What has the UPA government done," he asked.
Pointing out that 40 per cent of the rural population was giving up agriculture and agri-based professions and moving to other professions, he said at a time when children of politicians, doctors, industrialists and actors want to follow in the footsteps of their parents, the children of farmers were giving up agriculture and moving on to other means of earning.
He also alleged that the UPA government is diverting funds meant for the poor towards the Commonwealth Games.
