A day after the UPA's land acquisition bill hit a hurdle at a cabinet meeting, rural development minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday moved to garner political support for the bill within the party.

Ramesh started this renewed campaign with Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi. Ramesh is believed to have submitted a note on the bill to Gandhi, who supports better compensation for farmers.

The meeting assumes significance because in the cabinet meeting objections primarily came from Congress members, including Anand Sharma, Kamal Nath and CP Joshi. Earlier Trinamool Congress, the second-biggest ally of the ruling dispensation, was seen as the biggest roadblock. “Trinamool had agreed to the amendments,” claimed a top official of the rural ministry.
