A rape accused was given a unique punishment after he reached a compromise with the girl and married her.
Agreeing to Ramesh’s (name changed) request to quash the rape charges against him, the Delhi high court on Wednesday imposed a condition — he had to supply 100 blankets to those struggling in the cold on roads and in night shelters.
He has been asked to hand over the blankets to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board.
Public prosecutor Naveen Sharma was surprised at justice Suresh Kait’s decision and opposed it by saying that “an offense as serious as rape is non-compoundable and invites punishments up to life sentence”. But the judge was inclined to give the youth another chance.
While quashing the rape charges, the judge considered the “peculiar circumstances of the case” and the fact that the youth agreed to marry the girl and the girl’s need for social acceptability.
The girl, a resident of Lahori Gate, was forced to file an FIR against the youth for rape after he sexually exploited her under the false promise of marriage.
Things took a turn for the worse when he not only refused to marry her but also threatened to kill her if she made their relation public.
