Rapist tried to bribe victim’s father
Sanjeev Kumar, who raped a 12-year-old girl at Swaroop Nagar in northwest Delhi, apparently offered a bribe of Rs 3 lakh to the victim's father to hush up the matter, reports Vijaita Singh.
Traffic Policeman Sanjeev Kumar, who raped a 12-year-old girl at Swaroop Nagar in northwest Delhi on Thursday evening, apparently offered a bribe of Rs 3 lakh to the victim's father to hush up the matter. He has been summarily dismissed from service on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.
The girl was forcibly pulled inside the car while she was guarding her family's belongings outside a temple, the police said on Friday. The police also arrested Naresh Mann (25) — a friend of the policeman —who was present in the car when the girl was being abducted.
"My parents and three siblings had gone inside the temple on Thursday while I was guarding the belongings outside. We had just arrived from Rajasthan from a pilgrimage. My father wanted to visit the Balaji Temple in Swaroop Nagar before we went home. I was forcibly pulled inside the car while I was keeping vigil over the luggage. He beat me up and then did wrong things to me," the victim said. The girl, who is in deep trauma, was given counseling by an NGO on Friday.
Around 1.30 p.m. on Thursday, the policeman and his friend Naresh forced the victim inside the car. While Naresh got down after some time, the policeman drove the car to a secluded place and then raped her.
After raping her, the accused dropped the victim outside the temple. "My daughter was in a sorry state. We had been looking for her for an hour. The policeman dropped her at the temple and when I confronted him, he started throwing his weight around. He offered me Rs 3 lakh not to report the matter to the police," said the victim's father.
Residents torch car
On Friday, angry residents torched the car in which the victim was raped. The police have arrested one Manoj Kumar, a native of Bihar, for causing mischief by fire after the incident. A case has been registered at the Swaroop Nagar police station. The residents also blocked the road.
Cop worth crores
Sanjeev Kumar was posted with the Research and Development Branch of the Delhi Traffic Police at Teen Murti Lines. "He stopped going to office from April 11 after he was denied leave. Her mother is in hospital and he owns several properties worth crores in his native village Nangal Poona," said a senior police officer. He also owns a flat in Shimla. He was produced before a city court and was sent to 14 days' judicial custody along with his friend Naresh. A case of rape and abduction was registered at the Swaroop Nagar police station.
Swaroop Nagar SHO Dayanand Singhal was shunted to the Seventh Battalion, a punishment posting in the wake of the incident.
