Real-time flight info goes for a toss

The DGCA has asked airlines to provide information to passengers about delays, rescheduling and cancellation of flights in advance through SMS, email or phone but airlines say it is not quite possible as they themselves get to know about the visibility status at the last moment.
“On the basis of prediction, we cannot cancel or reschedule flights. Sometimes visibility dips to zero within seconds and we fail to inform passengers. In such cases, they reach airports, resulting in chaos,” an Air India officer said.
Passengers say there is lack of information even after they reach to airport. “Every year, passengers complain there is no one to inform them at the airport. DGCA has asked airlines to position a senior officer at IGI Airport during the fog period for passenger facilitation,” a DGCA officer said.
“A proper information system can save us from inconvenience. In fog season, passengers leave home early expecting traffic jams,” Dinesh Singh, a frequent traveller said.
Foreign carriers have also been asked to ensure timely flight information to passengers. Also, the airport operator will have to display weather-related updates on the display boards.
