Law Minister Kapil Sibal told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that the government would issue orders to continue with the reservation policy in institutes like AIIMS, if the SC gave an unfavorable verdict on a review petition filed by it.
“If the apex court gives an unfavorable verdict, we will consult the Attorney General and issue a government order to ensure that the policy remains in place in future too,” Sibal said, after Opposition members raised the issue.
He said that after the apex court turned down reservation for SCs/STs and OBCs in AIIMS, the government filed a review petition on August 14. Agreeing with arguments raised by JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav, he said there was “no change in the reservation policy for the weaker sections”.
Yadav had said that SC’s verdict could be overturned through a constitutional amendment.
