For 3.45 lakh cars in areas that fall under the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), there are only 70 parking lots.
No wonder thousands of cars are parked on colony roads, causing congestion.
Understandably, the new plan of the civic body in which parking lots would be constructed underneath parks — on lines of the parking lot at the Palika Bazar — has been welcomed by the residents.
As per the recent housing survey of Delhi released by the Census of India, there are around 15 lakh households in SDMC, which includes south Delhi, south west Delhi and west Delhi.
"There is hardly any parking space left even on the roads as during the night all colony roads get clogged with cars. Parking lot underneath parks will not only be convenient but will also be a safer option," said Kriti Chadha, a resident of Greater Kailash I.
Parking lots underneath parks in SDMC area will not only solve the parking crisis of the heavily populated south and west Delhi colonies but will also earn revenue for the corporation.
"Many households have two or more cars but there is no space to park. People are ready to pay if they get safe and convenient parking facility. The corporation, too, will get a revenue generating source," said Ashish Sood, chairman, remunerative project cell, SDMC.
