The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has asked the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi to review the cases of about 20 SC/ST students who are about to be removed from the institution on the ground of poor performance or lack of attendance on Tuesday, the Commission summoned IIT Delhi director Surendra Prasad in the presence of the aggrieved students.

The commission took cognizance of the matter when some of the students filed a complaint that out of the 28 students to be chucked out, at least 20 were reserved category students. Surendra Prasad said he would review the cases but refused to say whether any of the students would be taken back. “The cases will be reviewed. If there is a genuine mistake, it will be corrected,” he told reporters after the meeting.

Commission Chairman Buta Singh said that IIT Delhi does not follow UGC guidelines regarding SCs and STs, which is a violation. “They have admitted that they follow rules determined by their Board and not UGC guidelines, which are mandatory for all Central Universities and deemed universities receiving grants-in-aid from the public exchequer. All these educational institutions should have admission quotas as well as in-house training for SC/ST students to bring them at par with general candidates. While IIT Bombay does intimate parents if a student is under-performing, IIT Delhi did not involve parents in the case of these students. The students have also complained about arbitrary deduction of marks. We have asked them to review the cases and inform us within two weeks,” Buta Singh told a press conference.

One of the aggrieved students said the marks of the SC/ST students who were about to be expelled had been deliberately cut on caste lines. However, IIT Alumni Association general secretary V.K. Arora says that IITs do not discriminate against students from weaker sections.
