In 2013, 14 people had lost their lives in road mishaps on Holi. In 2012, there were 13 fatalities.

“Our aim is to bring down the number of such deaths during festivals. Compared to last year, the number has come down by half this time. In two out of four cases reported this year, the victims or the drivers were at fault,” said Muktesh Chander, special commissioner of police (traffic).

In one of the four accidents, a motorcycle rammed a Metro pillar near central Delhi’s Panchkuian Road, killing a woman who was riding pillion.

“Both the riders were not wearing helmets and the woman died on the spot because of the impact of the accident,” Chander said.

Traffic officials said 5,624 traffic violations were reported on Thursday and 639 licences seized for at least three months, following the Supreme Court orders.

Of the 5,624 violations, 313 were booked for speeding, 218 for dangerous driving, 1,941 for drunken driving, 2,129 for riding without helmet, 499 for triple riding, 130 for driving on the wrong side and 294 for other offences.

Around 1,085 vehicles were also impounded. Apart from these prosecutions, 550 fines were issued a night before Holi to the drivers who were found speeding on the city roads in an inebriated condition.

The department collected Rs 5.51 lakh as fines from violators. In 2015, 5,500 violations had been reported.
