A portion of a road caved in at a central Delhi area on Wednesday, affecting traffic for several hours.
A part of the Mathura Road in front of the Delhi zoo gave in due to leak and bursting of a water pipeline, an official of PWD, under which the road falls, said.
A pit of about five-metre diametre was created due to the road collapse, which also caused traffic disruption for five-six hours. The official said the road was repaired by evening.
A Delhi Traffic Police official said plying of vehicles was restored in the area after the pit was covered. This is the second incident of such cave-in at a central Delhi area in recent days. On Tuesday, a portion of Hailey Road near Kasturba Gandhi Marg caved in during the rains, the second time since February 8.
According to NDMC, that road collapsed after “trenchless digging” damaged a pipeline underneath. A five-ft-deep crater was formed and traffic police had to barricade the road to divert traffic. In trenchless digging, only the sides of the road are dug to lay pipelines or other utilities instead of cutting the entire road open.
