Road makeover on fast track

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is all set to begin streetscaping work on 12 major roads near the 2010 Commonwealth Games venues.
According to the civic body, the consultants appointed for it have finalised all drawings and designs.
“The Public Works Department and the state government had appointed these consultants to decide the designs for 23 roads around various Games venues.
“Of these, 12 roads come under the jurisdiction of the MCD. We will start work on them now,” said a senior municipal corporation official.
These include arterial and service roads too.
The civic agency will spend over Rs 100 crore for their makeover. It will also improve and widen roads near Jawaharlal Nehru and Thyagraj stadiums.
It will also upgrade and strengthen roads near Siri Fort Stadium, R K Khanna stadium, Karni Singh Shooting Range and Delhi University.
“The transport infrastructure — including the riding quality, footpaths, streets schooling, etc, — on roads linking the venues need to be upgraded,” an MCD official said.
Besides overall upgradation, he streetscaping work includes installing street furniture and strengthening stretches along the Games venues.
The civic body also plans to install information panels across the city.
Aesthetic improvement of street poles and fixtures will be carried out and public information kiosks will be set up across the city with phone booths.
In addition to this, parks will be beautified and plants such as ficus benzominea, phenia palm will be planted.
Sculptures showing themes of the Games will be put up at various locations.
Public toilets, vending machines, bus shelters, tree guards, dustbins, benches will also be installed.
