Road repair work stuck in bureaucratic muddle

The MCD on Monday said that improvement of 19 crucial roads in the city is stuck in bureaucratic muddle as the MCD has not received approval from the Delhi government to carry out the work.
The 19 roads include rural, urban and colony roads which the MCD had decided to develop as they were starting to get damaged. The total budget was estimated at about Rs 112 crore.
On March 15, the MCD sent the proposal for the repair and renovation of the roads but even after nine months the projects have not been cleared, leading to delays, said MCD officials.
On Monday, representatives of MCD met officials of the urban development ministry asking them to intervene and hasten the process of getting approval.
"The Central government has already sanctioned the money for the projects but the delay is due to the non approval from Delhi government," said Yogender Chandolia, chairman of MCD Standing Committee.
“After the meeting, UD ministry officials said they will talk to finance secretary and ask him to hasten the process,” added Chandolia.
With elections early next year, the MCD is trying to work out road related projects. But according to its politicians, proposals are stuck due to delays from the Delhi government.
Last week, it said that an additional 116 road repair projects are getting delayed due to lack of administrative approvals.
