With a rise in accidents involving these buses, the transport department is now considering replacing rural transport vehicles(RTVs) with new vehicles in the city. Senior transport department officials said they have been “directed” to form a policy to phase out RTVs. According to officials, transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely convened a special meeting today to discuss use of alternative vehicles instead of mini-buses. The meeting came hours after an RTV turned turtle near Waziarabad, killing a student and injuring 11 others. There are about 1,300 RTVs plying on several routes in rural and urban parts of the Capital. Most operators, said officials, have made illegal changes in the bodies of these buses making them more vulnerable on roads.

“We may soon come up with a notice to RTV owners to find a replacement for their vehicles. We may give them permits for longer durations to ply their buses in Delhi,” said an official requesting anonymity.
