The fashion week season kick-starts today with the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) being done by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).
The event boasts of 175 registered buyers including such biggies as Barney’s and Anthropology from the United States.
“We have 102 participating designers at this event. As for business, we expect to do fairly decent business during this season,” said FDCI President Sunil Sethi.
“While domestic buyers constitute majority of the buying, with the recession sweeping across Europe and the US, chances are that the buyers from there will be looking for something fresh from India. Indian designer garments are competitively priced and at the same time maintain international quality.”
This is the 10th year of fashion weeks in India. The concept of fashion week was started to promote the business of fashion.
Along with the number of fashion designers, the number of fashion weeks has also grown from one to three.
Tomorrow, the Delhi Fashion Week (DFW) by the Fashion Foundation of India (FFI) will also begin in Delhi and from March 27 to April 1 will be time for Lakmè Fashion Week (LFW) in Mumbai.
On its part, the Ministry of Textiles has recently formed a body — Fashion Design Promotion Council (FDPC) — for the welfare of fashion designers in India.
