After reconstructing YS Sachan’s last moments in Lucknow jail, the CBI investigators are of the opinion that he tried to commit suicide by inflicting wounds on himself and after the effort failed, he hanged himself using his belt.

He was found dead on June 22 last year in the toilet of Lucknow jail in mysterious circumstances. Sachan, who was Lucknow deputy chief medical officer at the time, was arrested on charges of being involved in the murders of two Lucknow CMOs. According to sources, the two doctors were murdered in an effort to keep a lid on the scam in expenditure incurred in the implementation of National Rural Health Mission scheme in the state.

Sachan's mysterious death on the day when UP police had decided to move court for his custodial interrogation in the murder cases had kicked up a storm. The case was later handed over to the CBI. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/04-01-pg8a.jpg

"There was a roll call in jail at seven in the morning and Sachan was present for it. When second roll call took place at 12 in the noon, the jail warders didn't find him in his ward and assumed that he may have been taken for his court appearance. But in the evening, Sachan was still missing. The jail authorities then mounted a search and found his body hanging in the toilet," a source said.

According to CBI sources, after consulting experts at AIIMS in the Delhi, the agency has formed the opinion that almost all the wounds found on Sachan's body seem to be self-inflicted and ante-mortem or before his death. "It seems that the blood that came out of wounds was not enough to kill him and in another effort to commit suicide Sachan hanged himself," said an official on the condition of anonymity.

The CBI sleuths are now trying to establish the reasons behind the suicide.
