Sanjeev Nanda, sentenced to seven-year jail term in the BMW hit and run case, was on Tuesday granted three weeks' bail by the Delhi High Court to attend the funeral of his grand father and former naval chief Admiral S M Nanda.
Justice Kailash Gambhir granted the bail for three weeks and directed Nanda to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of like amount to the Jail Superintendent of Tihar jail where he is currently lodged.
"Considering the patriotic and dedicated services rendered by Admiral Nanda, which is a well-acknowledged fact, I feel the sentence of the appellant deserved to be suspended for a period of three weeks," the court said.
"I am of the view that presence of the appellant (Nanda) by the side of his mourning family at this hour to attend funeral and other ceremonies as per their customs is indispensable and is well deserved," the court said in the bail order.
Last September, Nanda was sentenced to seven-year imprisonment for killing six persons, including three police personnel, while driving his BMW car in January 1999.
Nanda has been interim bail by the High Court twice earlier to see his grandfather who was ailing.
Admiral Nanda (93), a veteran of the 1971 Indo-Pak war, died last evening here.
