Prithvi Raj Sawhney and Rajesh Gehlot were elected as the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi on Friday.

BSP’s Hari Ram Kardam withdrew from the contest even before the voting began. Of the total 275 votes polled, Sawhney bagged 178 while Congress’ mayoral candidate got 88 votes. Nine votes were declared invalid.

Of the three candidates in fray for the post of Deputy Mayor, another BSP candidate, Sanjay Gupta, withdrew before the polling started. Adopting the voting pattern for Mayor’s post, as proposed by Opposition leader Jai Kishen Sharma and seconded by Leader of the House Subhash Arya, BJP’s Rajesh Gehlot was elected beating Congress’ Saranjeet Sharma.

The three members elected unanimously to the MCD’s Standing Committee are Yogendra Chandolia (BJP), Sarita Choudhary (BJP) and Jai Kishan Sharma (Congress).
