The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre and the Delhi government to respond to petitions filed by farmers from Rohini area seeking higher compensation for their land acquired by authorities.

Over 150 farmers of Holambi Kalan and Sanot villages in North-West Delhi have filed about 80 petitions before the apex court against "low rate of compensation" fixed by the Delhi High Court. After admitting the petitions, the bench said these would tag the matter with other related cases.

A bench of justice GS Singhvi and justice SJ Mukhopadhaya admitted the petitions and ordered it to be tagged with other similar cases of farmers demanding higher compensation.

On behalf of the farmers, advocate Surat Singh said instead of paying the prevailing market rate of R20,000 per square yard, the Delhi government has paid only around Rs 300 per sq to the aggrieved farmers.

He said it was a well-settled law by the Supreme Court that highest market rate of the land should be paid to farmers at the time of acquisitions of their land. The counsel also said that the government itself sold the nearby land at the rate of over R60,000 per square yard for DSIDC Mall.
