SC panel slams PDs
The Supreme Court-appointed vigilance committee, headed by former SC judge Justice D P Wadhwa, has slammed the public distribution system (PDS) in the country and said the Rs 28,000 crore subsidy annually spent by the Centre was being pocketed by "vested interests."

The panel suggested drastic action to stem the rot in the system that is witnessing "rampant corruption, black marketing and diversion of funds."
The report was submitted before a bench headed by Justice Dalveer Bhandari, which took it on record for passing appropriate orders.
The report stated: "Corruption is all pervasive in the entire chain ... It is true that most of the functionaries under them in the department are typically ... resort to corrupt practices."
The panel recommended breaking the strong nexus between the forces by setting up an effective vigilant mechanism but did not elaborate.
The SC had appointed the panel while dealing with a PIL filed by PUCL in 2001.
