Tired of monitoring the Gazipur abattoir case, the Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Delhi Government to redress the grievances of butchers who are hesitating to start operations at the modern slaughterhouse.
A bench headed by Justice V.S. Sirpurkar said the Supreme Court monitored the construction of the modern slaughterhouse in the interest of the national capital.
It also said the court could not be expected to run it.
Justice Sirpurkar appeared perturbed at the various applications filed by the butchers who have refused to move to the new slaughterhouse.
Giving them time till November 30, the bench said its earlier order that permitted them to operate from Idgah in Sadar Bazar would not work from December 1.
The bench also asked the butchers to address their grievances to the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi within the next two weeks. The court gave six weeks time to civic agency and
the Delhi Government to take action on the matter after receiving complaints from the butchers.
The butchers are opposing the move to close the Idgah abattoir and shift to the modern slaughterhouse at Ghazipur on the ground that the foul smell of the nearby landfill site would create unhygienic conditions.
They have also complained against the authorities for not getting environmental clearances from the agencies.
The corporation’s counsel Sanjeev Sen countered the butchers’ arguments in the court. “The pollution clearance has been received by us. We have all the necessary licences and the environmental statutory clearances have been obtained,” he said.
Sen also rubbished the claim made by butchers on the lack of adequate space for a livestock market.
He said the slaughterhouse has modern facilities and latest technology to cater to the needs of an environment-friendly abattoir.
