The state government announced an allocation of a little over 10 per cent of the budget outlay towards the education sector on Monday.

In a bid to achieve the government’s aim of providing better quality school education to all and also making the Capital a centre of international excellence for higher education, the finance minister declared enhanced grants for school students and post graduate (PG) students at Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) and Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Research (DIPSR).

While the grant given to Class XI and XII students to purchase books has been increased from Rs 300 and Rs 350 to Rs 600 and Rs 800 respectively, PG students at DCE will now receive Rs 8,000 as scholarship, as against Rs 5,000 in the last academic session. Ph.D scholars, on the other hand, will get Rs 12,250 instead of Rs 7,000.

“This revision was long due and it is in consonance with the revised rates of the government of India. The increase in the scholarship grant will definitely work in favour of the institute as we should now be able to attract good talent at the post-graduate and research level with the enhanced scholarships,” said PB Sharma, Principal, Delhi College of Engineering.

The scholarship for PG students of DIPSR has been enhanced from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000.

For the 2009-10 academic year, the government has upgraded 34 middle schools to the secondary level and 21 secondary schools to the senior secondary level.

That apart, nursery classes have been introduced in 172 Sarvodaya Schools.

While The National Law School University, has started functioning in Dwarka during the academic year 2008-09, B.R. Ambedkar University at Dwarka started a diploma in development studies this year.
