More than 10 students of a South Delhi school were injured when their school bus met with an accident on Tuesday morning. The children were in the age group of 10-16 years.

Two teachers were among those injured in the accident in Sector 1 crossing in RK Puram.

Over 20 students of GD Goenka Public, Vasant Kunj, were going to Munirka to pick up more students around 7 in the morning when another school bus with 15 children hit their school bus from behind.

The other bus was carrying students of Guru Harkishan Public School and was coming from Africa Avenue side.

“The chartered bus had jumped a traffic light and hit the other bus from behind. The bus which was hit overturned and the children in it were thrown out of the vehicle due to the impact,” said a senior police officer.

Swan Chowdhury, a shopkeeper who witnessed the accident said, “I heard a loud thud and then the bus was lying upside down. The students were crying for help and some were bleeding.”

Police said the chartered bus was speeding. Its driver, Ranbir Singh, from Guru Harkishan Public School was arrested.

“The driver was rash and didn’t care that schoolchildren were travelling in the bus. He tried to flee after the accident but was apprehended,” the police officer said.

The driver of GD Goenka School called the school authorities and a school ambulance was rushed to the spot. While four students were taken to Safdarjung Hospital, six were taken to Fortis Hospital.

D.M. Sharma, principal of GD Goenka Public School, Vasant Kunj, said, “All the students are fine and were discharged after medical examination.”
