Security was strengthened around the US Embassy and nearby areas in the city's diplomatic enclave on Monday following the killing of al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden by American forces in Pakistan.

"Additional police personnel have been deployed and patrolling has been intensified around the US Embassy after the incident," a senior police official said.

Security has also been stepped up in nearby areas in the diplomatic enclave of Chanakya Puri in south Delhi, he said.

Almost 10 years after the 9/11 terror strike, al Qaeda mastermind and the world's most dreaded terrorist bin Laden was killed by US forces this morning after being hounded in a special operation in Abbottabad in Pakistan.

The United States has issued a worldwide travel alert for its citizens, especially those living in Pakistan, soon after President Barack Obama announced that bin Laden has been killed.
