Hours after they struck at a home, a 60-year-old servant, his son from a second wife and their landlord were arrested for drugging and robbing a senior citizen in central Delhi on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Vivek Kishore said that Ram Bachan Tiwari, a cook who retired from the Indian Army eight years ago, had masterminded the crime. After months of deliberation, he had robbed his employer, who lived in Daryaganj, just a week before his daughter's marriage.

"He was aware that the marriage of his employer's daughter was to be solemnised in the last week of May and that jewellery, cash and valuables would be there in the house. So he planned the robbery and also involved his friend and landlord Shabbir. He also called his son Imran from his native place to assist them in executing the plan," Kishore said.

Tiwari, according to the victim's younger brother Alok Pratap Rastogi, had been hired a mere six days ago at the suggestion of a relative's maid. The family had chosen not to get Tiwari's antecedents verified by the police.

Having shifted base to northeast Delhi's Shastri Park to get his heart ailment treated, Tiwari had decided to earn fast cash when he felt short of money.

"My sister was at home as the rest of the family went shopping last evening. Tiwari gave my sister some food laced with a sedative before binding her limbs with her own clothes with his accomplices. They then escaped with all the cash and jewellery," rued Rastogi.

The police were informed about the incident when the victim's daughter came back home from wedding shopping at 7:45 pm.

"On a tip-off, we deployed a team at Chandni Chowk where we suspected the trio to dispose off the booty. They were arrested as soon as they were recognised by the victim's daughter. Cash to the tune of Rs 93,500, $204, 10,000 Yuan and jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh were recovered from them," Kishore said.
