The Goels had celebrated their marriage anniversary six days ago. Ashok Goel retired from the Taj Mansingh hotel three years ago. He and his wife Lata were stabbed and bludgeoned to death allegedly by their newly hired domestic help, Mukesh Yadav, at their Niti Bagh house on Monday morning. Police said more than one person was involved in the crime. A long knife was recovered from the house.
“They had thrown a party at their house on May 20, their marriage anniversary. We were also invited but could not make it. That was the last I heard from him,” said VK Gupta, a cousin of the Goels. The victim was also on the advisory board of the Akshardham temple.
The Goels have two daughters, Rakhi and Pooja, both of them married. The sisters live in Punjabi Bagh and Pitampura areas of west Delhi. It was Rakhi’s son Ayush (13) who called the police. “I want my nana naani back,” said Ayush.
Around 11.20 am, Ayush called the PCR and said “my nana nani are not responding to phone calls and their house is locked from inside. Please check.” The family, who lives in Pitampura, then informed a neighbour who went to the house and found it locked from inside.
Goel’s son-in-law, Ashish Gupta told HT that the family has not been able to ascertain the amount of the valuables stolen from the house yet. “The bodies have been sent for postmortem. My in-laws had sent the servant for police verification on Sunday. Their bodies were found in the drawing and dining rooms. He might have killed them last night. After the crime he had even switched off the lights from inside,” said Ashish Gupta, the son-in-law. The accused was hired eight days ago on the reference of Lata’s younger sister’s domestic help.
After killing the couple, the suspect bolted the main and rear doors from inside and fled after scaling the boundary wall, police said. The accused had pulled Lata’s hair and beat her up before killing her. Ashok was stabbed in his neck and was hit by a blunt object on his head. He bore several stab wounds on his body.
Lata was hit so badly that her neck and throat had almost severed from the torso, said a police officer. Several teams have been sent to railway stations and bus stands to look Yadav. He belonged to Bhagalpur in Bihar.
