In Kamla Nagar, the parking lot remains underutilised, as the waiting time is more due to the facility being automated. In Model town, people mostly prefer surface parking over multilevel one.

After missing multiple deadlines, seven multilevel parking projects in North Delhi seem to be finally on track.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has completed tendering process for two multilevel parking sites in Rani Bagh and Shiva Market.

For remaining ones in Shastri Park, Idgah, Gandhi Maidan, Rajendra Nagar and Shalimar Bagh, works have been expedited and tendering will be completed in two months, said a senior official of North Corporation.

On the instructions of Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, officials of the North Corporation held a meeting, after which the works were speeded up. December 2019 was fixed as the deadline for all the projects, the NDMC official said.

The facilities will have space to park 5,600 cars — 600 in Rani Bagh, 500 in Shiva Market, 600 in Shastri Park, 1,000 in Idgah, 1,000 in Gandhi Maidan, 700 in Rajendra Nagar and 200 in Shalimar Bagh.

The Rani Bagh multilevel car parking site, to be developed at cost of Rs 60 crore, will be spread across 4,000 square metres and will be nine floors high.

Shiva Market too will have a nine-storied parking lot, which will be spread across 2,600 square metres and will cost around Rs 50 crore.

“We have struck a deal with private players, under which they will develop these two parking lots. They will pay a fixed amount to the corporation. In return, they can use an equal space that they have developed for parking, for commercial use and earn money through it,” the NDMC official added.

It has also been decided that Gandhi Maidan and Idgah multilevel parking sites will be developed by the corporation itself. “Others are likely to be developed by private players,” the official said.

The car parking site at Idgah would be of 27,990 square metres and would be of three floors; the one in Gandhi Maidan would be around 6,000 square metres. Details for other projects will be chalked out in a month’s time.

Most of these multilevel parking projects have missed multiple deadlines. Rani Bagh and Shiva Market projects were conceived in 2012 and others were proposed in later years.
