Kavita Chauhan (22) came to Delhi six months ago to become a chartered accountant. But her dreams were cut short on Thursday when her boyfriend allegedly stabbed her to death at her Patel Nagar hostel in central Delhi.
MBA aspirant Kapil Sharma (23) was arrested some hours later while allegedly trying to stab himself with the same knife. “After moving to Delhi, Chauhan concentrated on her studies. This irked Sharma and they often fought,” said Jaspal Singh, DCP (central).
Both Chauhan and Sharma were from Uttarakhand and knew each other since school, the police said. Chauhan was in the last semester at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
“She told Sharma she wanted to break up as she had failed to clear one of her semesters because of him,” said Singh. Chauhan had reportedly become intimate with a classmate and it bothered Sharma, the police said.
Around 7.30 p.m., Sharma waited for Chauhan outside the metro station.
Police believe it was a pre-mediated crime as Sharma bought a knife from the market before their meeting.
The couple reportedly had an argument at the station and Sharma snatched Chauhan’s cellphone to check her call details. She left for her hostel without the phone, the police said.
“An hour later, Sharma called up one of her friends and persuaded them to come to a nearby park. The couple had another row and Chauhan left for her hostel with her phone.
“Sharma drew the knife and followed her, her friends said. He stabbed her eight times in the verandah of her hostel,” said the officer.
The hostel’s watchman saw Sharma running away and informed police. Chauhan was dead before anyone could reach her, the police said.
Her father Suresh, who was with the Indian Navy, said he was unaware of her liaison with Sharma.
