Hitting out at the opposition, Dikshit said other political parties were trying to “politicise the issue”.

“One political party opened four outlets. Another party, which is trying to be a political party, opened two outlets. These parties are making gimmicks to gain political mileage,” Dikshit said in a press conference.

She said her government was selling onion at R45 per kilo through special mobile vans. The vegetable will be sold for R35-40 per kilo from Tuesday when enhanced supply is likely to reach the Capital.

Wholesale prices of onion at Nashik (Maharastra) have already come down to R30-R35 per kilo, Dikshit said.

The BJP government’s defeat in the 1998 assembly elections is often attributed to soaring onion prices, which touched R60 a kilo then. Dikshit said unlike the then BJP government, her government was making all efforts to provide relief to the people.

“The BJP government fell because it did not try to help the people. It did not make any intervention to stabilise onion prices... They (BJP) think it will happen to us also,” Dikshit added.

Meanwhile, a day before the Delhi government is all set to roll out its ambitious food security scheme, the BJP criticised it by calling it a political gimmick.
