More than 10 friends of engineering student Shobhit Modi are under police scanner after the 20-year-old was found murdered outside a colony gate in Vasant Kunj on Thursday.
Seven teams of Delhi Police have been formed to investigate the case.
Police said none of the friends of the deceased, who were with him from 4:30pm till the time he left DLF Promenade mall in Vasant Kunj around 9pm on Thursday, have been given a clean chit as yet. Police are also questioning a friend with whom the deceased had had an argument over a girl two months ago.
"He met six of his friends at the mall. We are scanning his call details to find out whether he was in touch with other friends who were not present in the mall with them," said a senior police officer.
Shobhit had called his parents at 9:10pm, around the same time he left the mall with a girl. He told them that he will be home in 20 minutes.
Sources said, however, around 9:45pm, the security guard at gate number 3 of C-5 in Vasant Kunj saw a bleeding Shobhit at the colony gate.
"The guard on duty, Tek Chand, didn't see anyone dumping Shobhit, who was alive at that time and tried to enter the gate. Shobhit fell twice and in the third attempt, he fell on the boom barrier of the colony gate. This time Tek Chand noticed him but thought he was just another drunk man," the officer added.
Shobhit just lay there, bleeding. After some time the guard tried to talk to him but Shobhit was unable to speak. The guard then realised that he was bleeding, so he tried to use Shobhit's i-Phone to inform the police or someone but couldn't operate it. It was then that a girl called on Shobhit's phone and the guard informed her about the situation, police said.
"The girl then called Shobhit's parents, who called on Shobhit's phone to know the exact location. Suraj Modi, Shobhit's father, and brother Rohit rushed to the spot and took him to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead," said Shubham, Shobhit's cousin.
While Shobhit's family took him to the hospital, the guard informed the police. Police said Shobhit had four deep wounds apart from scratches, which suggested he resisted the attack. Unfolding of tragedy
Shobhit had done his schooling from a Kendriya Vidyalaya nearby but had also studied in a leading south Delhi school.
