Two girls and a boy - of the five friends Shobhit Modi had met a few hours before his death on May 5 - have been given a clean chit.
But the police said his girlfriend Radhika (name changed) and another boy are still under the scanner, apart from a few other friends who Shobhit was in touch with the day he was killed.
Also, police said a girl was trying to get in touch with Shobhit the day he was killed but he had not taken any calls from her. The girl later called from an unknown number, which he didn't know and took the call. He then had an argument with her. Police have questioned this girl as well.
The south Delhi police are yet to make any breakthrough in the case even after five days of investigation into the murder of 20-year-old Shobhit Modi.
On Monday evening, the crime branch of Delhi Police were asked to assist the district police. At least 60 policemen are probing the case now.
"We are investigating several leads that we have come across over the past five days. Detailed discussions with doctors about the nature of injuries inflicted on Shobhit are being carried out," said Amulya Patnaik, joint commissioner of police (southern range).
There are four angles in this case that the police are looking into: robbery, honour killing, personal enmity and road rage.
Initially, Delhi Police had ruled out the robbery angle since all the valuable things that Shobhit had on him were found intact. "He was wearing a Tissot watch and branded shoes, apart from carrying a costly iPhone. But the attacker(s) didn't touch anything," said a senior police officer. The police are now probing whether Modi had picked up a fight with some local criminals while on his way home.
Hours after Shobhit's murder, his family had informed the police that the father of their son's girlfriend had threatened him several times over their relationship. The police had immediately called the girl and her parents for questioning and on the fifth day of the investigation they still remain suspects.
"In February, Radhika's father had sent four goons to beat Shobhit. He had also gone to Shobhit's house to threaten his father," said Shubham Modi, Shobhit's cousin. Even on the day Radhika called her father at 8:30pm asking him to pick her from the mall, he had got very angry.
The police have so far questioned over 40 friends of Shobhit's and are trying to establish if anyone didn't like his closeness with the girl. Police said one of Radhika's classmates didn't like her relationship with Shobhit.
"We are questioning him to know whether he could go to an extent to kill Shobhit," the officer added.
Police are also looking at the role of the girl whom Shobhit was avoiding talking to. Police said she didn't like Shobhit's closeness to Radhika.
The road Shobhit had taken that day is very isolated and the police are also looking at the possibility of Shobhit picking up a fight with someone on that road. "Since he was walking towards home, there is a possibility that someone stopped him or he asked someone for help which led to a fight. We are not sure but this angle is being explored," officer further said.
