Delhiites will now have to pay more for buying a diesel-run vehicles. Chief minister Sheila Dikshit has proposed levying an additional tax of 25% of the existing tax rates on diesel-propelled vehicles specified in the schedule-I of the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act 2004.

The charge will be applicable when you go for the registration of a vehicle. This means, if you are buying a diesel-run vehicle that costs between R4 lakh and R6 lakh, you will have to shell out R20,000 as tax. For vehicles costing between R6 lakh and R10 lakh, the registration charges will be between R 52,500 and R87,500. If the vehicle costs more than R10 lakh, then be prepared to pay R1.25 lakh as tax. The move will not only fill the government coffers, but also deal with the rising air pollution caused by diesel-run vehicles.

The extra tax on diesel-run vehicles comes a week after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi gave a go-ahead to a proposal to raise night parking charges, which will be applicable from April 1. The night parking charges were increased three times for cars costing between R4 and R10 lakh and more for cars costlier than R10 lakh.
