Several parts of the national capital received showers on Wednesday afternoon afternoon but the Weather Department said it did not signal the onset of monsoon, which has missed its June 29 date with the city.

The rains were reported from several parts of the capital, including Connaught Place, Raisana Hills and ITO at around 1:30 pm, a MeT Department official said.

However, he said, they were not monsoon showers.

The Met Department had earlier said that monsoon will not hit the capital on June 29, the usual onset of the rainy season in the capital. Last year, the monsoon had touched the city on June 30.

The earliest onset of monsoon over Delhi during the past 30 years was on June 15, 2008 and while the latest onset was on July 26.

"Till now monsoon has reached up to central and east India. Although good rainfall is occurring in most of the areas which has been covered by monsoon but there had not been any advance of the monsoon in the new areas since June 18.

"Further progress of monsoon is halted mainly due to non-formation of monsoon low pressure areas/monsoon depressions over Bay of Bengal. Strong northwesterly flow prevailing over most parts of northwest and adjoining central India and frequent western disturbances are also inhibiting the advance of monsoon," the official said.

The latest meteorological conditions suggest that monsoon is unlikely to advance over remaining parts of east and central India during next 2-4 days.
