Gaurav Kumar, 22, who was arrested for killing his cousins in their Patel Nagar house on Monday night, had called them before reaching their house to make sure they were at home alone.
After killing them, Kumar made a call to his brother in Himachal Pradesh and confessed to killing his cousins Shivani, 19, and Vishal, 16. In turn, his brother, who was on his way to Delhi with his parents, called and informed the police about Kumar’s grudge about the division of property.
“Kumar was looking for the right opportunity to take revenge. On Monday, he called Vishal and Shivani to know whether they were alone. He last spoke to Shivani at 7:55pm,” said a senior police officer, who did not wish to be identified.
Police said that Kumar, who had already purchased a country-made pistol, would have killed his uncle too had he been present in the house.
During interrogation, Kumar confessed to having called Vishal and Shivani.
“At 7.55pm, he called Shivani and asked her to open the door. Shivani sent Vishal to open the door and Kumar started following him. As Vishal reached his room, he shot him from point blank range. He then went to Shivani’s room and killed her,” the officer added.
After the murder, he stole some jewellery and rummaged through the clothes in the cupboards to make it look like a robbery attempt.
After talking to his brother, Kumar switched off his phone.
After arriving from Himachal, Kumar’s father informed the police that his son was depressed over the way the ancestral property had been divided.
“At around 1am, Gaurav came back to his house with blood stains on his clothes,” the officer said, adding, “Initially he tried to mislead the police by saying that he had gone to the Gurudwara.”
Police said that Kumar spent the entire Monday afternoon consuming alcohol. According to police, Gaurav’s dissatisfaction was triggered soon after his grandfather passed away last September 12.
