Chairman Hamid Ansari mentioned the passing away of Tiwari after six new members, including railway minister Mukul Roy, took oath.

Born in October 1941 in Siddhartha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, Tiwari had his education at Allahabad University and worked for uplift of the downtrodden sections, Ansari said.

An agriculturalist, advocate and social worker, Tiwari began his legislative career in 1997 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha, he said adding that he was member of the Lok Sabha two more times.

He represented the state of Uttar Pradesh in the Upper House from December 2006 to July 2010 and was re-elected in March.

"In passing away of Shri BB Tiwari, the country has lost a veteran parliamentarian and a noted social worker. We deeply mourn the passing away of Shri BB Tiwari," he said.

The House observed silence as mark of respect to the departed soul, after which Ansari adjourned it for the day.
