Come Thursday and commuters using the Nizamuddin Bridge will be a relieved lot. All carriageways of the 550-metre-long bridge will be thrown open to the public on Thursday, said the Delhi traffic police.

“We hope that the entire bridge will be thrown open to the public on Thursday as the public works department (PWD) has almost completed the repair work,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

It is for the first time in 15 years that the bridge, connecting east to south Delhi, has undergone some major repair work.

The bridge has been undergoing major repair work for over a month now. Commuters faced a lot of inconvenience, especially during the peak morning and evening hours, as at least two carriageways were closed for vehicles. Traffic congestions were seen at Nizamuddin Bridge and areas on both sides of the bridge, including Ring Road, Noida Link Road and NH-24.

The PWD had sought a 40-day permission from the Delhi traffic police to carry out the work. The repair work started on February 3.

“Working on war-footing, we managed to complete almost the entire work much before the deadline. We will hand it over for public use on Thursday morning,” said a PWD official.

The PWD in consultation with the Delhi traffic police had decided to repair the bridge, which was due for at least 10 years. The department has changed the bridge’s three expansion joints.

Constructed in 1997, the bridge connects east Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad with the rest of the national Capital.
