On the night of March 25 — barely a week after Madhu Gupta (51) moved into an apartment in Dwarka’s sector 10 — a bike-borne assailant snatched away her belongings.
“He snatched my chain and handbag, which had about Rs 2.5 lakh,” said Gupta a senior official in Punjab National Bank.
“It was to be used to repay my son’s education loan,” she added.
The incident reportedly occurred outside the Dwarka sector-10 metro station around 10.45 p.m.
“My son, Karan and I had just stepped out of the metro station when a biker ran into me from behind and fled with my bag. It took just a fraction of a second,” she recalled.
“I was pushed to the ground and my forehead and knees were bleeding. We were left groping in the dark, since the area was pitch black.”
Gupta said she was most upset about losing $ 3800, money saved by her son to help her repay his education loan.
“He works and studies in the US. The money was to repay the education loan of about Rs 15 lakh, that we had taken for his stay there," she said.
Gupta said she was apprehensive about living in Dwarka. “We keep hearing of such incidents almost on a daily basis. Despite that, why can't the police take any preventive measures to ensure that they don't continue? There should at least be proper lighting on the streets,” she added.
“An FIR has been registered and investigations into the matter are on,” said R.S. Krishnaiah, ACP (southwest) Delhi. “We have also increased patrolling in the area,” Krishnaiah added.
